What your day will look like:

  • You will perform a variety of skilled level repairs, including overhaul and maintenance of buses, passenger vehicles, trucks, and a variety of other gasoline and propane powered motorized equipment.
  • Perform emergency school bus driver service.
  • Review mechanical repair orders and determine priority work assignments.
  • Observe, listen and diagnose mechanical defects and malfunctions.
  • Perform engine tune-ups and ignition system adjustments.
  • Inspect, adjust and replace brakes within specific guidelines.
  • Use a variety of hand tools, diagnostic equipment, welding equipment and a variety of mechanical aids in the repair, adjustment and maintenance of motorized equipment.
  • Perform road tests and inspect buses and other automotive equipment to ensure that malfunctions have been corrected, and that the equipment is functioning properly.
  • Estimate time and material costs concerning repair and maintenance functions.
  • May utilize electric and gas welding equipment, and drill presses in repairing and fabricating parts.
  • Respond to emergency roadside service needs.
  • Coordinate and direct the work of mechanic helpers.
  • Maintain a variety of files and records pertaining to motorized equipment repair, and maintenance.
  • Occasionally performs substitute school bus driver service.
  • Assist with the scheduling of servicing of buses, vans, and other maintenance vehicles with the Lead Technician.
  • Assist with the checking of roads during inclement weather with the lead Technician.
  • Assist with the bus maintenance, mechanical work and bus garage maintenance with the Head Mechanic.
  • Assist with communicating all concerns regarding bus maintenance and repair, bus drivers, and bus garage maintenance to the Head Mechanic
  • Assist with all mechanical work to be completed on school owned vehicles with the Lead Technician.
  • Assist with determining the needs for bus garage mechanical equipment and tools with the Lead Technician.
  • Assist with the checking in, storage, and inventory of all bus garage equipment and supplies with the Lead Technician.
  • Assist with the scheduling of bus garage maintenance with the Lead Technician.
  • Assist with the pick up and delivery of bus garage equipment and supplies and buses with the Lead Technician.
  • Performance of all other duties as assigned by the Lead Technician.

  • You have an understanding of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of a variety of gasoline and propane powered motorized vehicles and equipment; the principles and theories of the internal combustion engine; and the legal mandates, policies, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to the repair, and maintenance of transportation and automotive equipment;
  • You understand safe working methods and procedures.
  • You are able to diagnose and locate mechanical and electrical malfunctions and defects; perform skilled gasoline and propane automotive repair, and maintenance functions; and can operate a variety of equipment utilized in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and propane powered motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • You are able to interpret mechanical and electrical schematics and diagrams.
  • You can establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
